SKILLS OF MANAGERS
Managers are required to possess various skills for successful performance of their responsibilities. These skills are generally classified into three though some authors have four categories.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Ø Refers to ability and knowledge in using the equipment, techniques and procedures involved in performing tasks.
E.g.: Ability in programming and operating computer.
HUMAN/INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Ø Consist of ability to work effectively with other people both as individuals and as members of a group.
Ø While technical skills involve mastery of things, human skills are concerned with understanding of people.
CONCEPTUAL/ADMINISTRATIVE SKILLS
Ø Ability to see the whole organization and the interrelationships between its parts.
Ø Conceptual skills help the manager to conceptualize the environment, to analyze the forces working in a situation and to take a broad and foresighted view of the organization.
N.B: These skills are interrelated, but their proportion or relative significance varies with the level of mgt.
MGT: Management.
TOP MGT = conceptual skills
MIDDLE MGT = human skills
OPERATING MGT = technical skills
